October is National Arts and Humanities Month, the country’s largest annual celebration of the arts. First designated in 1993, the event was designed to promote Americans’ exploration of the arts and to encourage their ongoing participation in the arts; it also recognizes the importance of culture in America.

The arts and humanities contribute to our cultural heritage and economy. Additionally, they have helped to break down social and political barriers. For example, Theatre A La Carte’s upcoming production of Next to Normal in November won the Pulitzer Prize for drama because it expanded the scope of subject matter for musicals, focusing on the impact mental illness has on a family.

October is the perfect month for you and your family to support the arts and culture and celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month. You could explore new types of music (Japanese koto music) or dance (tango or contra dancing), learn another language, read poetry, visit a museum, see a foreign film, or purchase your Theatre A La Carte season tickets!
